According to a report from NBC Philadelphia, it’s not uncommon today for couples, DJs, and cover bands, to draw up a list of the artists they do and don’t want to hear at their wedding reception and private parties.
In a report from the outlet, the story of Marc Brookland and his fiancée was told, a narrative in which the bride and groom explained that they refused to play Michael Jackson and R. Kelly. The 29-year-old said “we can’t play those,” in reference to the two recently shamed stars.
Following the release of the Surviving R. Kelly documentary on Lifetime earlier this year, as well as the release of Leaving Neverland, regarding the supposed crimes of Michael Jackson, some people are torn on the question as to whether or not one can separate the art from the artist.
According to the outlet, there are some people wondering if it’s still ok to enjoy the work of someone who has been accused of some kind of crime or transgression. For instance, can a person still enjoy Louis CK or a Woody Allen film as they once did?

According to Chris Keenan, a DJ based out of Fort Washington who is also the owner of the company, Futurescapes Entertainment, R. Kelly is pretty much a “no-go” at all events now. On the other hand, people seem to be far more forgiving of Michael Jackson, who supposedly sexually abused young boys.
While Keenan believes that Kelly is barred from venues now, the situation with Jackson is far more complicated, as the pop star was accused of molesting children in the 1990s as well as in the 2000s up until his death around 2009.
However, the primary difference – in addition to the nature and number of incidents – between R. Kelly and Jackson is that the latter has been dead for ten years. It’s hard to say whether fans could give someone up as important as Jackson, considering he has so many hit songs that have gone down in history in an undeniable way.
Much of the artist’s musical repertoire is considered to be some of the most iconic songs of all time, moreover, Jackson has a song for every occasion. R. Kelly, on the other hand, might have 2-3 songs that could be played at a reception.

According to NBC News, of the 200 most requested tracks at weddings, there are six from Michael Jackson, another two from the Jackson 5. Jackson’s iconic song, “Billie Jean,” is #48 on the chart, whereas R. Kelly’s song, “Ignition,” is #56.
