David Spades mom yelled Lupus! when she first met Selena Gomez

David Spade is promoting three projects presently. He has his audio book, A Polaroid Guy in a Snapchat World, which just came out, his Netflix movie, Father of the Year, that started streaming today and he reprised his role of The Invisible Man in Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, which is already out (and doing really well at the box office). When David was on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, David told a funny story about his mom, Judith, meeting Selena Gomez at the premiere. Apparently, David’s mother, like Selena, suffers from Lupus. So, using “mom logic.” when she met Selena, it made perfect sense in her mind to just shout out, “Lupus!” to Selena by way of greetings.

Even stars get embarrassed by their moms—just ask David Spade.

The actor recalled his mom’s awkward encounter with Selena Gomez on Tuesday’s episode of The Tonight Show.

Both Spade and Gomez do voiceovers for the animated film Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation. So when it came time for the premiere, Spade decided to invite his family members, including his mother, his daughter Harper and his niece Bea—the daughter of the late Kate Spade.

“She’s a huge star,” Spade told Jimmy Fallon. “They’re sort of bored with me.”
Spade managed to find Gomez and asked if she’d be willing to meet his family. After giving the girls a few hugs, Gomez greeted Spade’s mother. However, his mom didn’t exactly make the best first impression.

“My mom goes ‘lupus!'” Spade recalled, noting that both she and Gomez have the autoimmune disease.

Despite the awkward moment, Gomez tried to be welcoming. She said her lupus often makes her feel tired and asked Spade’s mother if she experiences similar symptoms.
“She goes, ‘Nope! Full of energy,'” Spade recalled. “I go ‘Mom! Play along! She’s trying to relate to you!'”

*record scratch* David has a nine-year-old daughter? How did I not know this? As for his mom, I get it. My mom makes up words for things if she doesn’t like the one that current exists, so I spend a good portion of my life translating my mother for people. Part of our obligation as children is to exist in the wake of Mom-embarrassment. I love that Mrs. Spade just twists the knife in David’s back by saying, “Nope! Full of energy!” Gah, Ma-hm! I posted the video below because he tells it in a really funny way. I get the feeling all the current talk show hosts love David as a guest because they know him from their stand up days together. His time on their couches is basically a bit for him – he’s always entertaining.

For all that is going well for David, he is also dealing with some much tougher issues. He’s fielding questions about his sister-in-law Kate Spade’s suicide during his junkets. He’s been gracious about the outpouring of sympathy and even worked a little humor into an interview with Robin Roberts, telling her that his dates would dress better if they knew they’d be seeing Kate. He then added that Kate knew this and would always acknowledge their efforts. He is still visibly upset when discussing her but I think he’s taking so many questions on Kate so he can deflect from his brother Andy having to. It’s really quite sweet. David also donated $100,000 to mental health after Kate’s death, something that became doubly important when his ex, Heather Locklear, entered a mental health facility recently. David told Andy Cohen he’s been in contact with Heather since her legal troubles and said that Heather had reached out to him after Kate’s death. It’s good to know they have a strong support network. I hope they both find the peace they need soon.
