Jason Kelce confirms NFL's most controversial play is getting trademarked

It's the most controversial play in the NFL right now, but it looks as though the 'Brotherly Shove' is here to stay.

The play is essentially a quarterback sneak where Jalen Hurts, lined up behind Kelce at centre, is pushed forward by teammates in formation behind him.

The tactic has been incredibly successful for the Eagles since it became a regular part of their play book in 2022.

Last year's Super Bowl runners-up have run it 37 times in the regular season, securing a first down or a touchdown on 34 of those attempts, with a success rate of 92%.

Previously known as the 'Tush Push', Kelce gave his verdict on the play's official title and confirmed the Eagles had applied to trademark the term 'Brotherly Shove'.

The trademark would give the Eagles exclusive rights to produce merchandise including T-shirts, jumpers and other clothing.

Kelce appeared as a guest analyst on Amazon Prime's Thursday Night Football coverage of Carolina Panthers at Chicago Bears.

He said: "I think the Eagles just officially filed paperwork for the trademark of 'Brotherly Shove,' so I guess it's the 'Brotherly Shove."

He added: "That's what they would prefer."

Meanwhile it seems the rest of the league would prefer the play be outlawed altogether.

A ban on the Tush Push has been under discussion since the end of last season.

The NFL competition committee was split over whether to outlaw the play in the off-season, according to Atlanta Falcons president Rich McKay, who is also the chairman of the committee.

Earlier this season Washington defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio described the move as a "rugby play".

He said: "I would personally like to see it eliminated, not just because they run it better than anybody, although they do run it better than anybody.

"But I don't think that's a football play. I think it's a nice rugby play, and it's not what we're looking for in football."

Elsewhere, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield said the "rules might need to change".

The Eagles sit out Week 10 on a bye before resuming their season against Kansas City Chiefs in a repeat of last season's Super Bowl.

The Monday night clash also sees Kelce face off against his brother and podcast co-host, Travis.
